Rochdale was historically a part of Lancashire, and its recorded history begins with an entry in the 1086 Domesday Book under Recedham Manor. By 1251, Rochdale had become important enough to be granted a Royal charter. Following on from this, Rochdale flourished into a centre of northern England's woollen trade, and by the early 1700s was described as being "remarkable for many wealthy merchants".
